    Accreditation is an assurance that the professionals who serve us have a solid educational foundation and are capable of leading the way in innovation, emerging technologies, and in anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public. Accreditation provides an opportunity for academic institutions to demonstrate they are committed to maintaining their programs' quality and that their programs are performing at the level required by the professions they serve. Programs undergo periodic accreditation to ensure that they continue to meet quality standards set by the profession. The result provides lasting benefits to students, the institution, employers, the professions, and society as a whole.

    Students who graduate from accredited programs have access to enhanced opportunities in employment; licensure, registration and certification; graduate education and global mobility.

    Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) enables academic institutions to demonstrate to the public that they are serious about advancing the quality of their programs. It is recognition by the technical professions that these programs are preparing students well, and it encourages "best practices" in education through formal, continuous quality improvement (CQI) processes. When a program becomes ABET-accredited, it means that it i) has received international recognition of its quality, ii) promotes "best practices" in education, iii) directly involves faculty and staff in self-assessment and continuous quality improvement processes, iv) is based on "learning outcomes," rather than "teaching inputs" and v) can more easily determine the acceptability of transfer credits.

    ABET is an integral part of each of these areas because we accredit over 3,100 applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology programs at more than 670 colleges and universities in 24 countries worldwide. Approximately 85,000 students graduate from ABET-accredited programs each year.

    In the United States, program accreditation is voluntary. Many institutions choose ABET accreditation for their programs because it offers many benefits, such as peer-review, recognition of the program's commitment to quality, and insights from the professionals who review the programs.


    In this workshop, various criteria for the accreditation, assessment, students learning outcomes and other needed knowledge for self-study report will be discussed via a number of case studies to gain hands-on experience.

Biography of Instructors

    Dr. Gurdeep S. Hura received his B. E. (B. S.) in Electronics and Tele-Communication Engineering from Government Engineering College, Jabalpur University (India) in 1972, M. E. (M.S.) in Controls and Guidance Systems from University of Roorkee (India) in 1975 and Ph.D. from University of Roorkee (India) in 1984, respectively. His Ph.D Dissertation was on "On the Petri nets analysis and some design aspects of Software Systems". He received Khosla award for his best dissertation.

    He joined the faculty of Regional Engineering College, Kurukshetra (India) in 1974 as a Lecturer and was promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor in 1983. He held a Post Doctoral Fellowship in the Department of Computer Science, Concordia University, Montreal, Canada during 1984-1985 academic year. He joined the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering of Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio (USA) in 1984-1985. He was awarded excellence teaching award in 1991. He moved as Visiting Professor in Applied Science Department, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore from 1994-1998. He joined the faculty of Computer Science, at University of Idaho, Idaho Falls in 1998 and worked as coordinators of Department of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering. He was awarded excellence in teaching and excellence in advising in 2001 and 2003 respectively. He joined Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, West Virginia University Institute of Technology, Montgomery, West Virginia as a Professor and Chair in Jan 2005.

    He moved to University of Maryland Eastern Shore as a Professor and Chair of Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in July 2006.

    His research interests include Petri net modeling and their applications, computer networks and network security, software engineering, distributed systems.

    He has supervised over 5 PhDs and 25 MS theses and served on a number of graduate committees.

    He is an author/co-author of over hundred technical papers, which were published, in International IEEE journals and conferences. He guest edited special issues on "Petri nets and related graph models: Past, Present and Future", 1991, “The Practice of Performance modeling and reliability analysis”, 1996, and “Internet: The state of the art”, Computer Communication (Elsevier, UK), 1998.

    He is on editorial board of Computer Communications (Elsevier), International Journal of Electronics and Reliability, and International Journal of Computation in Intelligence and Bioinformatics and Regional Editor of Journal of Integrated design and Process control (SDPS).

    He was elevated to Fellow of Society for Design and Process Science in 2002.

    He is a senior member of IEEE and was a member of ACM (1987-1989). He was Chairman of IEEE Computer Society (Dayton Chapter) from 1988-1990. He is a reviewer of various IEEE Transaction journals (Software engineering, Reliability, Computer) and is on the Program Committee of various IEEE Conferences (Distributed Computing System, System Integration, TENCON' Region 10). He has organized tutorials on Computer Networks, Modeling and analysis, software engineering in various International Conferences. He was a General Chairman of IEEE EMS Singapore in 1995.

    He has organized and chaired numerous special sessions on Petri nets and their applications, software engineering, and Computer networks. He has presented a number of Invited papers in various IEEE conferences.

    He has written a chapter on "Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, and Metropolitan Area Networks: An Overview" in Computer Engineering Handbook McGraw-Hill, 1992, another chapter on, "Use of Petri nets in System Reliability Evaluation" in the forthcoming book on "Current issues in System Reliability Evaluation" (Elsevier Publishing Co.1993). He has written a book (with Mukesh Singhal) on “Data and Computer Communications: Networking and internetworking”, CRC Press, 2001. He recently published a chapter on Terrestrial Networks in Handbook of Computer Networks, John Wiley, 2007.

    He is CAC ABET Program evaluator and has reviewed more than 16 computer science programs within USA. He is serving on the NSF panel review of CISE since 2000.

    He has worked on over two million funded projects mainly from DARPA, NSA, and Department of Energy. He was a consultant to NEC, Inc, Japan on load balancing aspect of its operating system for parallel machine (2000-2004).

    He has been listed in Marquis' Who's Who in Midwest, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Leading Technology, Who's Who in Emerging Leaders of America, and Who's Who in World. He has also been listed in International Directory of Distinguished Leadership (UK), and American Biographical Institute (USA).

    He has published over six papers, a chapter in handbook and submitted three proposals since joining UMES in July 2006. Currently he is revising the Computer Science Program that can be accredited by ABET.
